Look at the material that has failed
Recessed or open joints are different from fractured or displaced bricks. A new mortar face cannot restore the missing body of a damaged unit. Conversely, replacing sound bricks simply because their joints need attention may remove material unnecessarily. Describe what is visible without assuming the method.
Compatibility matters in existing masonry
The repair mortar should suit the masonry, exposure, and existing assembly. Color is only part of the selection. Older brick and stone can require particular care, and harder material is not automatically a better repair. Define a sensible repair area
A repair boundary should follow the actual deterioration and the condition of adjoining work. An arbitrary small patch can leave failing joints immediately beside new work. An unnecessarily broad replacement can lose sound original material. A clear assessment explains why a particular boundary is proposed.
Water and movement deserve attention
Where joints or units are repeatedly failing, ask what may be contributing to the damage. The surrounding roof details, drainage, support, and previous repairs may affect the scope. Cosmetic filling should not be treated as a guarantee that a cause has been resolved.
Compare the finish as well as the scope
Joint width, profile, texture, and weathering influence the appearance of the completed repair. Discuss the transition to existing work and whether a sample is useful. A repair can be technically appropriate without making an older wall look uniformly new.
